Select the turret base and press Shift + T to access the location where you can build your turret.
You can design you turret and save it, where you can add that design on others turret bases!

I have seen people who play on much higher difficulties than myself say that they're completely worthless unless (or even if!) the turret block is huge, and thus you're actually better off using stone instead.
But for them I think the block destruction rules are different (and harsher, and thus more important).

FWIW I have gotten into the habit of building everything on turret bases, and will frequently convert the underlying block into a turret base if I want a weapon in a particular location.
I like workshop designs with loads of turrets, because it makes my life easier.
Is that good? I don't know. Is it optimal? No idea. Is it worth me trying to unlearn that habit? Probably not, so long as I'm having fun.
