But doing the deliver war robots mission for example can net you quite a bit of rep. (or lose you rep if you don't have the proper license and get caught.)
The missions that seem to give the best rep are the out of sector pirate attack ones where you save a fleet of traders.
Trading and buying equipment nets you rep as well. or you can just go to the diplomacy screen and give them money/resources.
Taking out pirate sectors in their territory also seems to give quite a lot. (the well established ones that have stations especially)
Later on you can put up a station near or in their territory and the constant trading will always raise their rep to max eventually.
Trading in general can also raise rep really fast if you have the money. Just get a trade system module on your ship and check the trade routes it suggests every now and then. This is more effective the closer you get towards the center as the larger stations carry and accept more items.
Oh, also if the faction is at war with another one, then go and cause problems for that other one.
But in general the game rewards you rep fairly I feel. I will say it seems harder to please the factions further from the center because their stations don't buy much and the ships around there have hardly any HP or dps so the rep rewards from killing them are crap.
Yes, most missions are worthless, and finding the ones that are not, is more trouble than it's worth, making those worthless as well.
