Report a translation problem
So if you're adding them to an existing game there's a tiny little checkbox you click called 'override galaxy mods' or something like that.
By default it's off.
Note that some mods modify the save file, and that can have ... unexpected ... results when you force load them on a save that they weren't created with.

Personally I like to explore different strategies, so it's perfectly fine (for me) to make dozens of new games - and each different combination of mods can be its own game. If I find a new mod that I like the sound of, I'm happy to make a new game just for it.
