I don't think expecting people to play a 2 hour game session so their miner captain can come back with 1/20th of the ore you would have gotten just mining a sector is reasonable.
Also producing "good" fighters takes time. It's just so much fun to see an enemy fleet crumble to a crapload of Tesla/Lightning and Chaingun fighters. Just need to farm the A.I. a bit more, need more carriers!
Nyrin has a mod for that. When you load the game up it calculates time that has passed, and fires off all the ambush chances for that time too. So if you have a bunch of things happening and leave the game for a couple of hours you'll come back to vast wealth ... and a whole bunch of your most vulnerable ships all being attacked in different sectors at once.
