R Mining Lasers
The first mining laser I got was a purifying mining laser that processes and mines the ore. Then later in the game I found an R Mining Laser which is just a plain mining laser that does mines ore and doesn't process it. The R Mining Laser seems like a step down in tech and seems like something that should be cheap and start out with. Does anything feel like the R Mining Lasers should be the starter mining turrets because the purifying ones are so much more valuable because you skip the whole refining process that happens at the resource depot.

The actual yield from R-mining is several times that of purifying lasers. The extra step is giving you three or more times the material per rock.

Though yes, at the end of the day I feel like purifying miners should just be ditched entirely.

The point of the R ones is that you get much higher efficiency converting asteroids into usable materials.

Sure, you can keep using the 'P' ones to avoid the refinement step, but at the cost of efficiency. Actually, before 1.0 the P ones were the only ones available (just called 'mining laser', without the 'P' or 'R' designation). The addition of the R was welcomed by the community back when they were introduced, so I kind of find it funny you want to 'revert' back to the old ways.

I prefer the system as it is, since it gives you more options. Also, it kind of makes more sense, as well as give a purpose to those material traders.

Btw, in the older version, the highest (as far as I can remember) efficiency you could hope to get was around 40%, where as with R-mining lasers you can get 80-90% easily.

As above: if you want simplicity over yield, the standard mining lasers are better, but if you want efficiency the R-mining lasers are the way to go. With 2.0, the highest mining laser efficiency I've so far seen is 31.5%; the LOWEST R-mining laser efficiency being 49% (the highest one to date was just over 91% iirc).

The purifying miners are good for when all you've got is a small ship without much space to carry raw ores anyway, and it also makes setting up your first captains for mining missions easier since any ship can have purifying lasers added to it without the need of a cargo hold, but they quickly become obsolete once the need for bigger ships and more automated mining increases as you go towards the galaxy centre.

By the way M. That reminds me I was gonna post about the overpowered inventory system that allows unlimited storage and global access.

Hey guys, do i need a mining system if my ship has a miner as capitain? I think i'm getting a redundant perk, revealing hidden ores. And i think my capitain has a better range than the system.

If you're only ever going to use that ship yourself, it is a bit pointless - you may as well use the subsystem slot for something else since the miner captain also comes with unarmed turret slots. If you're planning on sending that ship on a mining mission, however, the miner captain + mining subsystem will result in higher yields than either one on its own.

Tried it and i confirm that. Thank you, i'm keeping my miner system on the ship then.
