x4 if you like building trade empires
A. Whilst it is in beta, you can pick it up for less the £13.59 [your equivalent currency] where as X4 is £39.99.
B. X3 is a far better game than X4
C. You can build your own ships, and guns on Avorion, use them and publish them on Steam, you can also build your own space stations, if you don't want to you can subscribe/Download another players designs.
D. Avorion has decent Mods [though the dev's did an update screwing up some mods and pissed off the mod community] and ones that works make the game flow better should need them
E. You can go it alone in single player or join a multiplayer server on Avorion
F. Whilst there is a story, you'll find that you'll bump into mostly you can just do what you like
G. Weapons go from naff to devastating in Avorion and you either pick them up from [the shattered hull of] enemies, create them or buy them.
H. You can capture ships [however it's something I need to learn about as you have to follow r.o.e to capture a ship]
I. Like The Deadly shoe says you can build empires on X4, there's an active trade system on X4 as well, one sector short on materials and you've got said material you can make a killing, however you have to put in the work. an all day-er, not so much with Avorion whether it's an hour or a day you put in what you want, it's can be throw away, or days of dedicated play.
J. You can build a fleet of dedicated ships for different tasks [with captains assigned to them] you tell them what needs doing e.g mining [trading is in all honesty just not where it should be yet] then sell it and make money, or patrol sectors get paid for taking down pirates.
There are other pluses and minuses but I'm glad I bought Avorion as I was disappointed X4.
X4 has the potential be become much more than Avorion, but its in a really poor state right now. And I don't think that will change anytime soon.
Avorion is more limited in what it tries to be and if the important elements in this game (building/designing, the rest is largely grind) is your thing, then I would advice Avorion over X4 right now.
X4 is a bit of a disappointment its not a terrible game but you need to fight it tooth and nail to get the most out of it. Its massively over complicated economy has a bad habit of breaking at random and you can end up having to can long running saves because the AI derped up and the economy fell apart.
