Is running a factory profitable?
I did some research with google, but all I can find are 3 year old posts about it's not profitable at all.

But I guess in 3 years this got balanced?

So if I throw a Laser Modulator Factory for 20 million $ in a NPC System and let it buy/sell stuff, will this be reliable?

Because setting up the production chain itself looks like a long and expensive way and I'm not even close yet to have all the money and mines for it.

It can be, but you might want to use a high quality trading system to check the local supply and demand for the product and its components. If all the components are really rare and expensive while the product is being produced in mass three sectors away, it might not be profitable.

That's the other reason I want to set this factory up. I explored around 1000 system by now and there is only 1! factory out there producing them. Demand is around ~260% atm.

Okay, I will give it a try then, thank you!

It’s likely going to be profitable. They usually are, though they’re far neon instant profit. If you plan to play for a long time, they pay off in the end. It takes many in game hours to pay for their initial construction though.

I’ll do some for fun, but typically speaking, by the time I have the cash to set them up, I’ve got the setup to make money by the half-billions and the amount stations will produce is insignificant. As has always been the case, there are some balance issues that the game has always suffered from, this being one.

Reported for honesty.

Would be a shame if....something happened to it....

For example?

I'm playing on Singleplayer and It's close to the starting sector, so no tough pirates are around, should be fine I think :D

@Chaoslink: Allright, ty for those infos. Maybe they will improve it with 2.0 or afterwards?

Would be nice to make stations creating and setting up production chains more important for the Singleplayer. As far as I know they are only really useful if you play on large Servers with lots of pvp fighting, where players need to rebuild their ships often and NPC Factories can't match the demand.
