Whats the benefits to building your own turret vs buying one?
So far it just seems like I'm better off buying a turret from a equipment dock rather than buying all the parts to construct one. I don't get it.

You can add the maximum amount of parts to a factory made turret, and if you find a good seed it will be drastically better than anything you will find as a drop. Look around a bunch of turret factories, eventually you will find one with very good damage.

Early game when you have no money making turrets can be difficult though.

The primary benefit of building your own turrets from a factory blueprint is that you get consistency between your turrets and are not subject to RNG giving you all dumbfire rockets. You can always find one of each turret type available in the loot table in that region, and you can somewhat customize the turret to your particular needs. You can also blueprint existing turrets. The factory also provides a reliable source for new weapons and mining/salvaging lasers if you are playing on Insane or Hardcore difficulty where your turrets are gone for good if blown off or you lose your ship.

You’ll see the difference when you’re firing 10 identical turrets versus 10 randomized ones. Matching fire rate, range and all that really makes a difference. Plus the stats are just far better when you can scale them up by adding parts.

Because you can get really powerful weapons by selecting the type and the features of the turrets that you specifically want.
