Also Ctrl+A works to select all blocks. Can be used to recolor or delete an entire ship or to select all blocks of the same type when filtering for them. Check F1 for other hotkeys.

For saving templates, simply select relevant blocks, copy them, open Saved Designs (O) and choose Save from Clipboard. You probably want to save them into separate Template folder already present to not mix them up with ship, or create a new Folder. You then can Copy to Clipboard when needed.

If you ever find yourself in a need to select all blocks of the same type, despite a designated button existing for that, I myself prefer using the 'Hide blocks' option in conjunction with 'Ctrl+A' method. Reason being, I often find myself also wanting to see the blocks when I select all of the same type.
