A lot of people find it counter-intuitive that the autopilot requires a captain but ... eh.

Ah thank you! that's exactly what I was looking for.
also, WOW devs! just one of many 2.0 changes that are ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE
Well i'd say that's semi good news but it's definitely much less interactive for me. I can't control any of my mining ships very efficiently now and can only have them randomly hop around dozens of sectors for ten minutes without ever mining anything. I noticed the new hyperspace system and order loop system don't work for me some of the time.
example:: If I tell a mining ship to mine a quadrant, they'll hyperjump to a random sector or two, then freeze in place with a "cant reach destination" tag even though they are already in a sector with 2000 asteroids. I'd say I'm pretty unlucky because I couldn't get any of my ships to mine a single resource last night without warping into the sector myself and using the RTS commands.
I couldn't get ItalianMafiaGuy's Order mod to work this morning but I'll try again later.
Plus this won't be as much of a problem once I can build giant mining carriers, but I wish they wouldn't have removed such a wonderful feature. It really trashes the early game flow for me.
I understand your frustration on this matter since I feel with you.
However, us disliking the changes which were made towards the AI orders is not equal to the devs aiming to make the game less fun on purpose. Yes we dislike these changes but spreading false information is not right. I do hope that they won't continue their performance optimisations trend at all costs.
But the majority of multiplayer servers I played on were the exact opposite, and simply refused to render any kind of out-of-sector mining causing no resource income at all.
Seems much more like a convienent mistruth to push forward their "vision of the game".
