after you dont need it, you can use it as purple ingridient in research to get another (useful) artifact.

Artifact does have quite a good use actually, apart from opening up the path into the core, and that is how it can activate the array of ancient gateways spread across the galaxy, giving you an extremely quick and easy way to traverse all over the galaxy within just a few minutes. Sure, it doesn't boost any stats of your ship, but those gateways are extremely useful, especially in multiplayer (and I feel they will be more useful with the upcoming patch if AI ships can enter them remotely).

Like Gotyam explained they have a use u've been told right away with the changes:
"XSTN-K-I: Project Exodus - Acts as a teleporter key to open Ancient Gates when equipped; Permanent installation is not necessary to use the gates."

You can discover the gates though exploration all over the galaxy (as they can exist anywhere outside the core). Search around in mass blips close to the rim you should have a greater chance at discovering them (just because there is less area to search). They are large enough for the largest of ships to fit through them, think they are several km in length.

I spent a day searching the server I play on after it, but this one was found inside the barrier (1st one I've found on the inside as well). Equipping the 1st artifact (no need for perma) activates the gate, and it links together in a giant network of gates spanning the entire galaxy.

I've yet to come across one as well, and I've explored a good portion of one of the quadrants and a few hundred blips. Do you need to have it equipped for the game to start giving the chance of spawning them in or is it just based on luck?

The chance of finding them is pure luck, especially since the amount of distance you can travel using them is the same as some wormholes, probably around 50-100 sectors usually. Only need the artifact to actually use them.
