GPU overload, game crash after closing builder
I'm not sure whether this issue existed before or not. Suffice to say, I don't often build ships that have 13k+ blocks and it might be my computer setup which is a little weak for handling a game like Avorion (or any game with high block count). So, as stated, my game crashes after I want to close the builder. So far, the issue was me redoing the paint of my ship, while everything else was going fine. Even when not doing anything, my GPU usage goes as high as 99%. That is after updating the drivers and all.

My question: Is this normal with a count as high as 13k? And if not, can something be done about it at this time?

Cheers in advance!

Gpu usage typically should be at 99%, if not, CPU is getting overloaded. I believe optimization isn't 100% yet anyway.

if your gpu goes to 99% you should do ship with less blocks lol. My usual games i go up to 30-50% . You should ask people with high count blocks ship in the workshop .

Technically speaking the graphics pushes the GPU harder than the ships do. Ship block count is an engine issue. The game engine can't handle all the objects and models appropriately at a certain point hence the stuttering.

drop your LOD, lighting effects, and shadows to lower settings. Should keep that ship of yours from wrecking your pc.

Ok. but its not healty for a gpu to run always at 99% =/ is it ... Also games have Character assets that have over 30 k polygon easy. Does the engine have to make a drawcall (cpu to gpu) for all the 13k box used to do the ship ? o_o Is the ship saved like an unique mesh ?

Do you mean if theres no FPS limitation the GPU will go full power ?

The ship's saved in the same usual way as the others. About FPS, I can only talk about my own, and the FPS was capped at 120 when the 99% occured. Tho, the GPU usage also depends on the sector I'm in, as in, it's far worse in systems with nebulae than without and/or with a complex background in it.

If anything, I would have thought that it's a RAM issue and not directly a GPU one (though, I do have 8gb RAM). That is, judging from the Task Manager, which I don't know can be used as a reliable way to pin down the problem.

GPUs are designed to go to 100% usage. They are typically limited by heat and CPU. also depending on the style of GPU you have, heat would be less of an issue. Typically in a good PC tower, airflow and temperature are well controlled. a GPU won't run into issues as long as it's staying under 90C. Obviously the lower the GPU temp the better. I do believe the issue specifically is with drawcalls. I run an FX-8350(4.2Ghz OC) and an Nvidia GTX 1070 FE(2Ghz OC). and i can pull easily 200FPS on a 3 screen setup, 5760x1080 resolution. However if you add all the objects of a high block ship, my FPS tanks. but my GPU doesn't lockup. which leads me to believe that it's a CPU drawcall issue and the game engine not capable of keeping up.

The GPU will push itself as hard as it can all the time, as long as there isn't an FPS cap, or a CPU/PC bottleneck.

you will actually suffer MORE FPS issues if your GPU is NOT at 99%. the way it works is if a GPU is running full speed you'll get the most frames. If it's not at 99% there is something else interfering with the GPU not allowing it to go to 99%.
