I tend to have just one ship with some mining (2-5 turrets), and lots of pew-pew turrets. I spend most of my time in tactical battles, but mine a little when moving up a level.
I tend to build turtle like ships with an hard crunchy outer protective shell, and the soft chewy goodness hidden in the center. I just grow the shell larger and larger (or longer, or wider).
I usually build in spurts, building a larger shell, then slowly filling in the guts with what every i need at the time, like crew compartments, hyper drive, generators, shields... Typically i build in 20x2x2 blocks (or some variant) and use a lighter material for the guts, like titanium or trinium. Later i can open the side and upgrade certain blocks to avorian (the ones that benefit from it). All blocks are accessable by removing one side of the ship.
My ships are not pretty, but I have never lost a brick ship yet:D I focus on a ton of firepower and lots of shields. I constantly tweak the ship to keep it up to the task at hand.
A little advice: Do NOT overpower the ship with engines to go super fast, unless you have enough braking thrust to handle it. Astroids are everywhere and if you hit one, guess who wins?
It can easily be deleted if you uncheck the safe mode option, wich will make another block your new core (usually the closest block to the ship's center)
and if your ship have enuff hp (big enuff) it can easily survive hitting an asteroid at 5000 m/s.
ps: i usually build the front of my hull first then start fitting my systems inside it and make my ship longer or shorter depending on how much space my systems require. I strongly advice placing your weapons on left and right of your ship. it can be on the front side but never the middle as the ennemies will target your core block wich is in the center. if your weapons are sitting on the middle block, that will be the first block to be destroyed and youll loose all your weapons right there.
