There is a boss or two later that is invulnerable until you interact with some mechanic (look it up if you want spoilers).
It was apparently implemented to "encourage" (read: force) the player to mix damage types. For some as yet unknown reason, having only one damage type is somehow against the intent of the game, so we lose that too. The main problem with this is the turret crafting and drop system, wherein a player very rarely finds turrets of two or more damage types which satisfy all other requirements, such as range and damage. Essentially you will never find two drops of different damage types which are on the same general power level. With crafting, you may have more luck, but it's still rare to find different turret designs of approximately the same capabilities in the same region.
I see it as just one more method to control how we play. Thankfully the mod works to disable it.
Some enemies have 90% damage resistance to various elements. Normally this is pretty much impossible to achieve on your own, it's just a dumb mechanic to make your designs useless against random targets.
Unless that was changed in a recent patch, the information posted above is still true.
