object detector highlight ranges and scanner function.
shouldnt object detectors have 4 or 5 times what they are to be functional?
it seems like i would need to take 4 to 6 ships with me to actually look through a sector. but i dont even know if this will work, and these systems rarely drop for me. to go looking for them.

and i havnt tried it to know if that will even work because:

i thought i would put a longer range scanner on a ship and use it as a remote scout for my mining ships, but quickly realised, scanners only work for player controlled ships. i wanted to jump a scout around, then switch to it to look at specific sectors when my miners needed a new place to farm. but the lack of function defeated the purpose defeating the purpose of scouts.

the first seems like it'd be an easy update, change to the highlight range from
3, 4, 5, 6km etc
to
8, 12, 16, 20km etc
might see if i can mod this myself once im done with a vanilla playthrough

the other... is that something to do with how sectors are loaded? does this impact trading systems too? i was hoping to send a scout back through the route i have explored to figure out trade routes, while i go make more salvage.

Scanners and Radars in this game are kindof dumb. I guess Radars work about as you could expect, but their functionality should already be tied into the same module slot as a scanner. If I gotta juggle 3 different forms of detection I'll just dump them all and get 3 more Shield boosters up in this ♥♥♥♥♥.

The "Universal Adventuring Companion" mod on workshop does this, it's great and only downside is a bit of a lag glitch with the item pickup sometimes and it doesn't give fighters the ability to transport cargo so you would need a separate transporter for it.

C45 Object detectors, at Exotic and Legendary, will highlight regardless of range, fwiw. The ranges on the lower grade ones also stack if you equip more than one.

Scanners (the actual upgrade called Scanner that tells you ship hps, etc) IMO are worthless.

For scouting a sector for mining opportunities, you want the radar upgrade that has the Deep Scan property (reveals hidden mass / yellow dot sectors).

It would be good, though, if more things like Radar and C45 Object Detectors worked from ships other than your own (I wonder if the devs ran into performance issues as to why they didn’t?).

that is what i am saying. under legendary, they are functionally useless. i dont want to build a 6 slot ship to see 20km.

indeed so. im wondering if radar data is tied to the sector you are in like a game of battleship with the hits scattered around. so you have to load the map fully for that to activate.

Well, it should be noted that seems stuff is typically scattered within 60km radius usually, that 20km would allow you to see everything with a quick pass through the sector. About what a "whole sector" upgrade would allow.

I'm not saying that what they currently have for range isn't really small, but I can see not making it too big, either.

There also may be other performance issues in there, too. Whole sector, you don't need to be constantly checking range. Anything with a range, you need to check what is within that range ring.

RCN upgrades (tractor beam) have a really small range for this reason. Someone else made a mod that increased their range to out around 20km. Lagged like royal ass.
