Edit: Sorry, should probably clarify that salvaging lasers (non R kind) are the only ones that won't require storage to use (they refine as they work). Regular weapons and r-salvaging produce scrap, which needs to be collected and then brought to a resource depot for refining.
Far as I know AI salvage/mining ships cannot be ordered to pick up floating scrap/ore - but if their ship has the correct permissions (and cargo space) they will suck those up by flying by them.
Generally I agree with you, for materials and cash definitely use a mining ship. A salvaging ship after that is also nice because it'll also pick up the mods and turrets from ships being salvaged.
Is there a "loop" order I missed? I usually just set them to "salvage - refine - salvage" and repeat if needed. Would be nice if there was a smarter way.
