But for mining, no. All AI ships do "bombing" runs, so either manual control, or build more fighters to speed up the process.
it was just wierd because when piloting them its not like they cant slow down

i advise against setting lower speeds only because i did that on 1 of my first that i built and it just took too long to recall them when you want to leave the sector.But to each his own
I agree to this in part. The reason why mining fighters are better is simply because you can make more. You have to find or build turrets to put on mining ships propper.
To that end, I usually make mining frigates with a full compliment of mining/salvaging fighters to do the work.
yeah, the ai is retarded beyond belief.
