(above 100% efficiency up to a 130% max.) it will repair damage on its own.
If blocks of your ship have been destroyed (broken glass symbol on the top center of your HUD), fully repairing your ship will cost less credits and resources if you let your mechanics replenish your ship's HP first.
The AI currently does not repair its ships as far as I know.
Auto-targeting repair turrets will heal vessels in range automaticly if slapped on a station or ship and set to autofire.
If you want to help your AI allies you have to repair their ships yourself.
As for pure repairships themselves, I never tested them.
I use a mix of 6 hull repair fighters and 6 hull and shield repair fighters.

If you move towards the enemy or the enemy moves towards you, your escorts will start fighting them.
If you want to retreat everything from a battle, just jump out and the escorts will all follow you automatically.
