You also need an assembly block in order to make your own.

EDIT: Created a Guide on Fighter Management

All content moved to the guide for better accuracy.

You can build or purchase 3 types of fighters with any of the 7 materials which match the types of turrets in-game:
  • Offensive (Chaingun, Bolter, Laser, Plasma, Cannon, etc.)
  • Salvaging
  • Mining
In order to have fighters, you must 1st have a hanger which requires Trinium, Xanium, Ogonite or Avorion.
You must then create at least 1 squadron in the hanger tab of the Ship Menu (P)
You can build or purchase fighters from a Fighter Factory depending on your relation with them:
  • Friendly relation - Allows purchasing fighters
  • Good relation - Allows building fighters
To automatically create fighters, you must first destroy one to create a "blueprint" by dragging the fighter to the blueprint slot to the left of the squadron. You can only have 1 template per squadron.
To enable production of the template, you must enable the queue by clicking on the square just above the gearbox icon.
The gearbox icon will show the percentage complete of the fighter in the queue.
To use fighters from the workshop, you must use the build option at a Fighter Factory.

Adding on a little bit here, you need assembly blocks as mentioned in the post before this but you also need the materials to make the fighter (like naonite)

Quite right. I updated my post. I didn't mention material requirements or the mathmatic specifics since those can change and should be fairly obvious. The "procedure" however is not immediately obvious and what I wanted to spell out since I needed to figure it out as well.

I do find it weird that they do not require much more than simple ore material to produce fighters, especially since you can slap a legendary turret on a fighter, turn it into a blue print and crank them out like crazy without the need for all those pesky turret parts. hehehe.

It would be a good idea to transfer a few of the end-result fighters to other ships that will be safeguarded so you can make blueprints again if the main carrier is lost in battle.

Thanks,
LHammonds

Im a bit lost as well, how do you design your own fighters, is there a factory similiar to turret factorys owned by npc's or is there another way?

You simply create a ship like any other method but make sure you do not use over 200 blocks. The scale will not matter because when it is used as a fighter, it is automatically scalled. You should have a blueprint at the end of ship creation and that is what you pick when at a Fighter Factory.

But rather than waste resources on building the ship, do so in a single-player creative world to make the design.
