Understanding crew. Generals > Commanders > Sargeants > Lieutenants etc? Help please?
Hi everyone. I've done some googling on this but to no avail.

I can't seem to figure out how to get a full crew compliment set up. I need to add more gunners to my ship, but it tells me I need to have more Lieutenants, I find one at a station but it says I can't hire one until I have more sargeants, but I can't find one of them until I have more commanders, then I can't have one of them until I have a general? But then when I found a general, I can't find any commanders at stations anymore. Is there a simple way to understand this because I'm totally confused by it. I want to fully crew out the ships I'm using (one I've made, one from the workshop) but it's not making a whole lot of sense at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

This is why you need to buy general personnel. You can assign non-specialists to specialist positions to cover all your positions. As your crew grows you will need more and more sergeants, lieutenants, etc.

For every 4 sergeants you need one lieutenant, every 4 lieutenants, 1 commander... etc.

You can use general crew for these positions until you find professionals. The advantage of professionals is that their skill improves over time.

Hi, thanks for your response. I tried doing this but it didn't seem to let me? There is no assign button next to the higher ranks, and the lower ones I can't assign until I actually have some IN the higher ranks? Perhaps I'm mis-understanding how it works. I'm in creative mode if that makes any difference too :)

I have a good stock of general crew too.

You can't assign "generic" crewmembers to high-rank positions such as commanders and generals.
And yes, finding crew for battleship-size ship is a PAIN. Because you first must find high-ranked officers, and then replace "generic" untrained crew by professionals, as they grow in skill strength and consume less money (as you have to hire less crewmembers compared to untrained "generic" crew)

Ah, so I just have to keep searching until I find some commanders, buy a few, then I can go and get some sargeants to work under then etc, so I have to work from the top down?

Exactly :)
And then you can (and must, unless you're ingame-billionaire) dismiss untrained crew as you find trained specialists to their positions.

I'm playing creative mode so money is no object really. But thanks for the tip. I guess it's just a case of time and effort, even in creative mode! haha :)

Too late for what?

I am using Google translation
I am sorry if I could not understand your problem correctly

It is easy for you to collect as many crews as you need for a ship
(In creative mode!)

The Only Neat Thing to Do, you need to find a shipyard.

You just "Bild ship" a ship of the same size as your own ship with ship yards.
At that time check the "Crew + captain" switch box.
In the ship made by Shipyard all the crews you want are
(CAPTAIN + Shogun + commander + lieutenant + sergeant + mechanic + engineer).
Please move the necessary crew to your boat.

Do you need gunners, miners or pilots? They should look for another station X (

Ahh, this sounds good. may try this later, thank you! :) I'm using a ship that I got off the workshop too. I didn't realise how much you can change the shapes of blocks until now. I played space engineers as my last building game and you can't change shapes and sized in that. Thanks for the tip :)

you have too many non managers. dismiss a couple gunners or miners and it should allow you to then hire the top tier you need. once you have that, you can start hiring the lower rank seargents etc, then once those are balanced you can then hire back the required non ranked crew.

I think I got onto some of that last night. I have more crew space on my ship that is required to run it, so I've over staffed some areas to increase the productivity :) Thanks for the tip! Can you ONLY hire generals and commanders then? You can't promote or assign them?

+1 for Poney. Stary from the top and work your way down. Bring up your menu by pressing P in game.

Maybe less confusion to go to your crew tab and see/write down how many General, commanders, lieuts, and sargents you need and aquire them first. Then focus on the rest.

Thanks :) I'll try and get the hang of it a bit better!
