Mining however provides faster returns I think, just keep your best stuff on the ships and let them do their thing. I also found that launchers seemed to help my miners tear through asteroids, not sure if you get less resources this way or not but its faster..
ALSO get one of those velocity unlockers and put one on every ship the AI uses, they zoom around instead of the crawling speed at default
In terms of raw speed/gains, you cant beat having a decent set of salvagers and a salvage yard. You'll make minimum 10x the material rate, plus be getting flat credit drops and turrets/modules.
It's incomparably faster than mining.
Also, if you're using weapons to mine with, unless you stop firing before the piece breaks you'll destroy 99% of the resource drops from asteroid chunk.
Nice, thanks for this
As for mining vs salvaging... I prefer this:
2 seeker manual-fire rockets (crafted, always), and 4 railguns (also crafted, manual fire).
Then 4-6 Independant Targeting salvaging beams (crafted as well), preferably with damage boost and no energy consumption.
If you need Xostan artifacts, you can farm The AI or Boss Swoks in further-out sectors for as many as you need, and you can equip multiple of the same.
Exotic or Legendary turret mods can out + xostan artifacts, but if you're trying to minimalize power consumption or don't want to risk RNG, that's your way to go.
Always fight at range and have good reverse thrust (not breaking, but to fly backwards). When you jump in automatically pick an e-jump site if you get bogged down.
Salvage Fighters are your friends. Honestly, direct resource salvaging isn't that good. What IS good, however is how many mods you can get and sell to directly buy resources you need. So you'll get credits, mods+turrets, and resources if done properly. And properly doesn't even mean high effort. Unless you just CANNOT fight stations to produce what you need for crafted turrets. I had to jump 30+ times to get Gauss parts for my railguns, so I bought out that station entirely haha
I'll have to keep an eye out for salvaging goodies and play around with them, as i've pretty much been doing mining exclusively since i've gottne past titanium.
(Edit)
Plus, farming AI is good because of the raw resources gain + mods. I typically sell resources for standing, and 2 or 3 AIs will likely give you enough to get neutral to friendly and several million credits. Set up IndepFiring pulse cannons and salvagers and semi afk just to watch shields if you didn't completely layer your ship in rock.
Unless you get jumped halfway through by pirates or xostan, rock gives 100% AI immunity.
Avorion has a sense of humor like that sometimes.
While salvage yards are great, finding unclaimed wreckage systems is easy once you get in to the territory where you can do the artifact delivery quest, and you no longer have to worry about your salvage rights running out in the middle of a pirate attack and angering the faction.
Alternately, make your own wreckage by blowing up pirate stations, or factions you don't like.
Iron can mine up to titanium.
I read on a loading screen that higher salvagers work on lower materials at a faster rate. I haven't tested it but if true it would be nice!
So far, the best blocks to go for are the generators, due to their high resource count, low durability and ease of identification due to the game always spawning armour blocks around them.
If you do come across a station wreckage (or make your own), but do not have salvagers that are up to par, it would be more worthwhile to mark the location on the map then get a laser with a higher efficiency.
Also, a higher material laser will work on a lower material faster, the bigger the gap in material level, the faster. However, a lower material laser will have diminished damage and efficiency on higher materials.
Good deal! You're my friend and i's favorite ship builder btw, we've both been rockin your stuff almost exclusively =P Would love to see a 10+ slot carrier (like 500+ min) lol.
If I had to choose to do only one or only the other, I'd definitely opt for salvaging because it gives me systems and turrets, too, not just minerals.
