How to use Salvage/Mining drones?

Title. I can start them from my ship but they wont mine or salvage. am i missing a menu?

Put them into a squad, target a wreck/asteroid, then click their squad icon and then click attack. Mining drones seem to do pretty well, but salvage drones cut the target in half, then only lock onto one part, then cut that in half, etc.

They should really just auto-salvage everything they can find

Wish they would work like mining command n a bigguer ship, i guess we are stuck using ship and not drone/fighter, also man are they flimsy. They need a better AI for their jobs, mining/salvage drone especially, if they woud auto-target on their own that would be a great step in the right direction. Maybe check for wreck/Roids around 5 km of the mothership or scanner range i dont know but something? that seem doable.

Because right now they are just a pain to manage/refill/rebuy etc for what they give back unless i missed something wich i dont think i do?

Nope, fighters pretty much suck, though they are good in a handful of ways. Awesome damage output when you have a handful of them, but they pop like popcorn, and are very literal in that they only attack exactly what you said to attack. If it breaks, they pick one piece. They need some work, but fortunately the dev has said that they will be worked on more.

Stupid question? but where do i get some drones?

Get up to... I forget which metal, but the third or fourth one down, and you can make hangars. Once you have a hangar, create a squad in the ship menu, then go to an equipment dock and you can purchase them. Each one needs a pilot, and leveling up pilots (reasonably) does not let them control more than one. Honestly, I recommend against them at the moment, except maybe miners.
