Is it possible that your virus scanner has blocked or deleted the server?

Norton firewall says Avorion server allowed. I will disable it now and check

Try repairing the steam installation, too. I've seen virus scanners that would just delete the server executable.

Norton firewall was not blocking it. I think Bigfoot Networks Killer Network Manager is blocking it.
It is NOT blocking avorianserver.exe it says "allow". BUT it does not even activate the option to allow avorion.exe The button that would allow you to activate access is greayed out. ALL other programs on the bigfoot Do allow you to activate. Trying to unblock on modem/router now. Will report how we fix it if we can fir others.

Yes Kane. My son and I spent 5 hours on it last night. Doing all the probably guilty stuff. and nothing. I still think it just does not like the network card, but since mine is built into th mother board I am not sure if I can bypass it

what version of windows are you using?
KnottyBoy Jan 24, 2017 @ 7:34am
Windows 10 fully up to date, drivers up to date. Trying it on my windows 7 computer at work. I have 2 identical computers at home, both dont work, lots of different software on each one. Both have the Bigfoot networks card on the motherboard. Going to try to add a new network card. I would think the default single player link would be 10.0.0.1.:27000. Forced it to that and still nothing. Its a comcast modem. Tried to default it to 127.0.0.1:27000. Wont allow it. Nothing is using port 27000. I have some spare network cards in some windows 8 computers. Going to try to install one of those and by pass the one on the motherboard to see if that works at all. Will advise if that works. But it will be 10 - 12 hours from now. Will advise if my work computer runs it.

What happens when you start a dedicated server and try to join via LAN? Does it show up?

Guys, you should make your own Discord server ;)
It would be easier to talk with you, talk with community etc.

Koonschi I am at work right now. I can use dicord at home but not at work. I fired up the game at work. The game Works totally fine on my windows 7 computer at work. I have other games that have this same problem (just different errors) but only on my home computers. I am 90% certain that it is the network card. I will not be refunding it afterall. I own my buisness so I can trade the computers for a bit to play if I have to. I am confident that its is Not a game problem, but rather a network card that just doesnt work with certain games. For instance. Trion's log in screen would not work on them for over a year, Then boom on one of the updates it must have finally figured out how to work with my nework card. I will switch to an alternate network card ronight and will update this post if that fixes it.

Yes the lan server does show up. I try to connect to it and receive the same error. Tried to connect to multiplayer servers same error.

Do you have a Killer Networks NIC in your machine? If so, I'd wager that it's causing your problem. You may need to make sure your drivers are up to date and disable the management of the NIC for it to work (I personally avoid those NICs as they don't really accelerate anything, just cause issues, in my experience).

In terms of Norton, there are two things you need to look at for network access, one is allowing the program outbound access from your PC, the other is allowing it to listen on ports. If you are running Windows 8 or 10 (not sure if 7 has this) try running the server, then opening "Resource Monitor". In Resource Monitor find the AvorionServer.exe entry and place a checkmark next to it. Then open the network tab, and look at listening ports. Verify that it is listening on at least 1 TCP and one UDP port (should be the same port number), also verify status is "not restricted". If it is showing as "Restricted" then Norton is blocking it's ability to listen for incoming traffic.

If playing with people outside the network, make sure your ports are forwarded on your router... also make sure the port forward matches the port shown in Resource Monitor (both TCP and UDP protocols are needed).

Most consumer routers support hair-pinning, but some don't. If you are playing on the same network as the server make sure to use the LAN address, not your router's address (for servers running on the same computer as the client, that client can use 127.0.0.1 as the IP).

Hair-pinning is when a computer on the local network tries to access the WAN address of the router, but that WAN address port forwards traffic back into the network. The traffic moves like a hairpin, inside to outside, then it curves around from outside to inside.

Hope that helps, I have not run into any issues getting the server up and running. I'm currently testing it to see how well I can get it running in my TCAdmin Control Panel. If I can do that, and if I can get authorization from the developer, we could offer this game through KillServers.com.
