You MIGHT run into problems if you leave your crew capacity really low for a prolonged period of time, but simply deleting your crew quarters will not delete your crew.
I must say, crew is a pita at the moment. I expanded my ship in a well populated zone but find it annoying that I have to go from place to place to hire the right folk.
I'm currently on the hunt for a general so that I can expand my roster of commanders to be able to add some leutenants so that there are enough sargeants on my ship. It's annoying having to click on each station and then go through their menus to find out who they have for hire.
A nice personnel dept in each system with more than 4 stations would be most welcome.
Honestly not sure how you didn't see that one coming.
Suggest next time you slap together a second 'ship' that's just a crew box and cargo, if you need that too, and transfer them over while you decide to obliterate your other ship.
At best its poor feedback for not telling me that it will remove 200+ people I cant get back without hours of station hopping. At worst it just a bad feature....
Yeah, it should absolutely at least warn you.
On the flipside, at the same time, I really don't get how someone can think they can delete their entire ship and expect their crew and cargo not to be deleted along with that. I mean, where are they gonna go?? I could see it if you had the ability to build and modify your own ship at a shipyard, then yes, it would be reasonable to expect your crew to transfer to the station while you rebuild... but in the middle of space... well, you just shoved them out the airlock and hoped for the best, really. Is it really that hard a concept that if you're going to delete the entire ship, you should put the crew someplace safe first?
I think that because I KEEP EVERYTHING ELSE!!!
Cash, and building materials stay put. Installed modules and cargo get ejected into space, while others stay in my inventory.
A player expects all resources to behave the same way and not for some to be destroyed, some to eject into space and some to just hang out in a magic endless inventory....
They probably didn't know what to do with the crew or its just not a finished feature. At any rate it should be consistent.
A system where you can promote your own crew if they are of the right level would be even better.
To me it really makes not sense that I've to scoure the universe and hire a random dude from a random base to command my ship when I've a thousand guys of my own I could just promote if experienced enough.
You DON'T have to find and hire a ranking officer, to be able to add more crew.
You can use GENERIC crewman in the officer slots and this will allow you to increase crew numbers.
Generic crew are just not trained, (don't give a bonus on productivity).
On the subject of a warning about lost crew.
Maybe a neat animation, where you see the frozen corpses, floating majestically past the camera view, to let you know something is amiss?
Seriously though. Yes. Some form of warning would be good.
:)
As a band-aid fix you can do that. It's not cheap nor effective though.
Everytime you do this there is also a detectable tremor in the force as if thousands of digital voices cried out and then suddenly went silent.
