-p is the player name. You don't type "arg", that's where you substitute the data.
-g is the type of good. -a is the amount. So the whole statement is:
/give -p Nick Peterson -g Iron -a 30000
/give -p "Nick Peterson" -g Iron -a 30000
/give "Lazarus Long" 1000 iron
Works just fine. You only need the quotes around your name if it has spaces in it.
