The dev streamlined it a bit in a recent update at the request of the community. Some were unhappy with it but it's actually much more practical than it was.
It now only displays when the information is relevant (build mode, trading, player info, etc).
I think there are 4 or 5 different hot keys/menus that will display it.
You can also see the total on the right hand side whenever you pick up any resource.
Really? It seems super annoying to have to hit a button to see critical information like that. I don't see how it's more practical, it's simply removing important information from the main display.
Any idea how to mod it back in? Seems shortsighted to just disable it without even the option to display it.
You don't need to know your resource count when you're in combat or exploring; it just clutters the screen. It would be like having your ship stats displayed all of the time; there's no need unless you're doing something to change those stats.
Once you get through the beginning of the game and sufficiently stockpile resources, you will never need to look at it again. It will eventually become completely irrelevant; thus it's not critical information as it has no bearing on gameplay.
It's exactly like any other game with player stats except the information is displayed on multiple menus instead of just one.
The vocal community requested the change so the dev delivered; can't really fault him for that. Some have requested a toggle option so it may be added but I think you will come to appreciate it as is once you get further along.
I don't know if there's a way to mod it back in. There were quite a few discussions about it after the patch; you could try searching the forums.
but i agree, there is simply no reason why it was shown all the time at first place... i feel comfortable with the new solution, getting updated when an amount changes and overall summary where i need it, totally fine...
For the mod thing i've read a couple of these requests, so i bet its just a matter of time before a modder comes up with a personalized solution
Perhaps it's because I'm new that I value having it displayed at all times. Oh well.
I blame remotes for T.V for my laziness.

I can see a use case for having this information persistently displayed, but I have outgrown the need for it personally. That being said...I have never approved of any user of any program, tool, interface, etc, being told "You don't need" whatever it is they're asking for. If they're asking for it, then that user clearly and obviously sees a need for it.
I see a lot of this in the community lately: "If I don't use it, it's worth nothing and asking for it is wrong." Eeeeeeeh, no. Personally, I feel like they could have given us the option to toggle it. But, like I said, there's a mod for it, so it's a non-issue.
Let's try to be more respectful of the needs and wants of others, yes? Different people play the same game in different ways, and with different goals in mind. It is not "wrong" to do so.
Please Note: I've no idea if the mod is current, and Rinart has apparently taken a hiatus from modding. You "should" be able to force-enable it without ill effect, UNLESS something in the stock game code has changed in recent updates which would invalidate the mod's code. There are a fair few "outdated" mods that still work 100% correctly. Just because the version number stated in the dependency section of modinfo.lua doesn't have the right Avorion version number listed...doesn't mean the mod won't work. It is literally just a pointer towards the Avorion version that the mod was designed for. You can alter that line to *.* and never see that warning message again.
