The problem with sprites is, that it applies automatically, if someone (a player) edits them, they will see the selected sprite, but the others will not. And sprites are automatically based on equipment. You can limit the equipment a unit can have, thus changing its sprite all accross the board for everyone, but I doubt such a mod exists. Besides, it would largely just handicap whoever limits their equipment.
I am not sure at all about the names, personally I rarely if ever check the names of the enemy divisions, I check their composition, but not their name.
About the ships I do not know, but with expert AI you can set what the AI can produce, even their naval research, however if the AI lacks the resources it will simply not produce it I think.
Normal AI is purposed to make mistakes and bad decisions to offer variety.
That mainly in strategic level. Not sure how it goes in tactical...
I mostly encounter the AI. Not making any good divisions. They forget certain things in their divisions. Support companies but also to make use of tanks. Tank variants ect.. It frustrating because even on the hardest difficulty. Any competent person can just roll over them if they know how to make a division.
Space marine divisions are especially good in overrunning any AI opponent. Also Encircling is a common thing that happens to AI. its so easy. They also forget 1 front and focus all of their stuff somewhere else. Like the british. They dont defend their home island. so you can just swoop in and take it.

is there improve AI without overhaul? Also without messing with settings yourself?
Expert AI change how the AI prioritize its research, the construction, how it's spending the PP, the designs of the divisions, the production etc ... It is not really a question to make it more historical but simple to make the game harder for the player.
