Is it possible to have multiple Vortex profiles with different mods activated?
Hi, so I was wondering something. Is it possible to have multiple Vortex profiles with different mods activated?

Basically, what I'm asking is, is it possible to have one profile with mods for the vanilla experience, and another with the vanilla mods disabled, and the Frost mod activated?

I think so. I'm using MO2 and it does so not to sure about Vortex.

Yes. I use Vortex, and I have 2 profiles for Skyrim SE and you can have zero mods loaded for one of the profiles also for Fallout 4. But I would still have the one you want as vanilla contain the Unofficial Patch and Engine Fixes even if you plan to do a vanilla playthrough.

Care to explain how that works for MO2? I've tried switching to two different profiles, but the mod settings I make don't change/stick when I do.

Yes, Vortex supports multiple profiles.

There is a separate setting to enable it though, it's not available by default.

One note on this however do not delete an inactive mod from one profile if it is active in another profile unless vortex has been changed that will remove it from all profiles.

I found that out when I removed the inactive ones listed at the bottom in one profile then switched to the other profile that used them and found they had been removed.

I can not speak for MO2 however it may have something like the deploy button vortex has that sometimes has to be manually selected after changing profiles.

Yeah don't delete - just disable.

I don't know why you'd delete instead of disable anyway if the mod is active in any profile anyway though...

At that time I did not know any better I had just started using vortex and the mods were at the bottom as not being installed rather than just being listed as disabled.

Not sure why you would delete OR disable anything, if the OP's goal is to play vanilla anyway. You don't have to touch anything from the first profile, just add the mods you want in the second profile.

As I stated I had just started using vortex I thought the mod list itself would be a separate one for each profile so when I made a second profile to play a different set of mods and saw the others listed as being there but not installed I removed them. I know now that was a dumb thing to do but that is how we learn especially if we did not take the time to read all the instructions and information before starting.

It does have profiles but it's a very weird implementation given that mods still need to be deployed to the actual game folder. If you're set on profiles, I would seriously stress using MO2 for this. And this is coming from someone who does use both, and is using Vortex for Fallout 4 currently.

Well, the deployment process is still just hardlinks, it's not actually moving files over. It's actually a fairly elegant solution.

Yes. This is very easy to do in Vortex. You can have as many game profiles as you like, only limited by the size of your Storage device.

And you can set up so the different profiles have their own saves also, so you dont load a wrong save in your modded games.

That, from experience in completely unrelated fields, can be very difficult to track, identify, and repair on the off chance something should go wrong. I prefer the file tree virtualization method. It's there or it's not. On example where this can break down in Vortex is when it mis-installs a newer version of the same mod and/or you remove an older version, but there's a file in the older version that is required by the newer version since the newer version is only an overwrite. But that's also a fault of the versioning process in Vortex. And yes, though I don't recall which mod, I have had this happen. I think it was in FO3, but could've been NV of SKSE.

Fair, there are downsides - I just like it because the OS treats it as if the files are actually there, so I can browse the folder as normal, deleting willy-nilly, and let Vortex freak out about it later :D
