Keep this in mind if you decide to use robots as provisioners. There's an annoying behavior in the game if you make a robot provisioner, add all kinds of upgrades and send it on its way, the robot will reset back to the BASE model as soon as the cell that it's in resets.
You can avoid this by making the robot a companion, dismiss it and THEN assign it as a provisioner. Because the bot is now marked Essential, it will NOT reset to the base model.
The exception to this is on Survival runs. Which if you do not heal them soon enough, they will return to their last assigned settlement or place you got them.
However this won't happen with Preston, Ada, and of course, the goodest of boys Dogmeat who doesn't judge your actions because he's the best
-Dogmeat died-
You can go through the entire game and never interact with Preston. He is not required for the game. And no companion* can die in the game, regardless of how hard you try to kill them. Thats what the essential tag does - makes them immune to death. Its the protected status that settlers have that makes it so only you can kill them by hitting them when they are down.
*Exceptions being for characters with potential scripted deaths, like Danse and Gage. Most companions aren't like that however.
