I'm not sure, but searching for this I came across the fact the team they are playing against in the beginning is called the Zanarkand Duggles.

Abe is the main character in the Abe's Odyssey game series.

So when you think of the Zanarkand Abes, think of our favorite Mudokon.

You know how they keep calling machines "machina"? Maybe that's how they pronounce apes, 'abes' :steamhappy::steamhappy::steamhappy:

Ok, back to sleep XD

Machina is Latin and means "machine" though. This is probably a reference to "Deus Ex Machina", Final Fantasy does this kind of stuff a lot.

Apparenlty "Abe" is a surname in Japanese, the game is Japanese, so this might have something to do with it.

Wouldn't be said the same way, though. What's the team name in Japanese? Still the Abes?

Abe is pronounced differently. So Square-Enix either royally screwed up the localization, or it's nothing to do with that.

It's nothing to do with it. The team's name is spelled in Katakana, which is used for words imported from foreign language.

Japanese transliteration is really peculiar. Katakana-zed English word doesn't necessary sounds like original word. Some examples of English > Katakana > Romaji transformation:
Bill > ビル > Biru
London > ロンドン > Rondon
Excalibur > エクスカリバー > Ekusukariba

Not that peculiar, really.

Katakana is used for phonetic transliterations based on a closest matching pronounciation. That's one way of handling transliteration into a language that does not employ the roman alphabet. It's a non-exact process by its very nature.
