Japanese lip flaps
Hey.

I just noticed, even with English voices and subtitles, the characters still have the Japanese lip flaps. This makes the lip flaps out of sync (a character appears speaking when the line has already ended).

Is there a fix for it or is it a setting I missed?

Weirdly, I play it in Japanese and it has the English version's lip sync. So I think it's a bug soon to be fixed.

I thought the English VA was recorded without altering the Japanese lip sync at all, hence the sometimes stifled and awkward English dialogue as they tried to get it as close as they could. It wouldn't make sense for you to be seeing an English sync if there never was one to begin with... As far as I remember, regardless of the audio used, the models will move in the same way.

Just play it like a good Godzilla film and accept the mis-sync as an endearing quality.

The lip sync is pretty bad in the Japanese version too (a bit better than English though). It wasn't until Kingdom Hearts that they actually got good looking mouth movement.

So people trying to mod the Japanese FMVs into the English subbed Japanese dubbed version of the game that was modded yesterday are wasting their time?

Hm. I own the console version and it does the same thing.

What's a Japanese lip flap? Is that like the obligatory racist black lips portrayed in all anime?

The movement of the lips was meant for japanese lanaguage it doesn't match up with the english language.

Well, yeah. They did mocap for the original Japanese dub, the lip animations ONLY match up in Japanese. When it came time to record the English dub it was the same as any anime, the dialog is crafted as best possible to match and actors do their best to synchronize but it's never going to be perfect.

Best not to focus too heavily on the lips, this was the first game Square Enix published with a voice over and it was a trial by fire. Hell, if you want the Japanese dub with English subtitles, be prepared to deal with English text that goes on for significantly longer than the original spoken audio. This is why the game doesn't ship with this as an option and why it will forever be a 3rd party hack.
