Anyone have any idea what engine square used for these games?
The engine the 13 trilogy was.....bad on pc to say the least. Framepacing FTW!

Really hope its an engine that takes well to pc.

It's not the same engine, that's for sure, but even if was, Lightning Returns was great on PC, and so is Final Fantasy XIV, which in fact uses the same engine the trilogy did.

1.0 used Crystal Tools engine, ARR/HW have a different engine.

And yes 1.0 was awesome just like Batman: AK.

yea its Phyre engine.
It also exists for Windows so I'm not surprised that they managed to make a PC port.
The dark souls 3 phyreengine...

I heard devs were denying that DkS3 and Bloodborne had old engines but lol Bloodborne has same old bug as DkS1 if not DeS...

Anyway, Sony Phyre is not engine like CryEngine or Id Tech, its more like Renderware, so it's pretty versalite and not limited to "oh ok it can have these kind of graphics"

Crystal Tools, it's an in-house engine that Square-Enix created. They were maligned at the time for basically creating that engine for Final Fantasy 13 on PS2, then scrapping it and starting a new one when it became clear they wouldn't have a game finished before the PS3 was mainstream.

There was a running joke for a while about them creating more engines than games.


The FFX/X-2 and Kingdom Hearts HD remixes all use the Phyre engine, and I suspect FFXII will also. It's not a bad engine, but its real purpose is only served on the PS3. Making efficient use of that stupid Cell CPU lead SONY to develop their own engine.

FFXII uses a custom developed version of Unreal Engine. After that Square enix did take some tech from Unreal and makes their own - Crystal Engine. PS3 was a hard time for a studios without their own tech that can run on ps3 so they did use third party stuff.

actually, FFX HD is kind of a hybrid, it still uses parts of the old PS2 engine for gamelogic, but rendering is fully done by the Phyre engine.
then a few more middlewares for audio and video like fmod and Iggy.

Id assume some updated engine from the PS2 days.

There was no thing like "game engine", like nowadays,u will just get a full devkit from Sony, plugins for third party software, tools for assets etc. Everything else was coded in C++ specially for this game.

Due a PS2 hardware, u cant use anything else for audio\video\3D\texture handling then PS2 chip has and can do. So you cant expand rendering video\audio tehniq due hardware limitations. PS2 was a most complicated video console then others.

PS3 got a more simplifield architecture that is much more closer to typical PC then older consoles (And PS4 is almost a PC, build in a box), and much more flexability.

To make a PS3 remastered version, Square has to enchance and remade assets for a multi target game engine. Since game mechanic was coded in C++ for a PS2, they has to rework that for a Phyre engine.
Since PS3 remaster FFX conversion, there was no point to rework that, due Phyre can compile for a target win x86 or x64 builds.
