It has 4K textures now. Please do try it and let me know if I need to tune the performance any :)
The Last Remnant is kinda similar... the game is fun until you know that the only thing you can really control is walking.
A good turn-based RPG (with a nice, but not-so-big story) I recommend is the Etrian Odyssey franchise.
It has the same kind of levelling system (although some characters will always execute some jobs (roles) better then others in endgame) and it follows the same kind of linearity as FFX. It has the same kind of endgame as well.
Be warned though that your party gets split up much more at times, but around the middle of the game they will all come back together again.
FFXIII has a very good battle system as well, if you really get into it and do not use auto attacks all the time (= very boring), pick your own commands it's much more fun.
BONUS: FFXIII-2 is very similar to FFX-2 if you like that one too :-)
Just to be clear I think XIII is fine, completed it all but one achievment on 360.
That being said, I do not agree with the claim of 'more complicated' worse translation effort imho and nothing more, the lore you speak of is called an e-book that is how the game gives most of it. The word datalog now brings tears to my eye. Lost Odyssey imo is a far better game for making you read pointless stories that give lore. Lastly on this point, very confusing does not equate to complex and imo would show a game to be poorly made if players are epected to be confused.
Crystarium is like a dumbed down standard sphere grid, play expert sphere grid and tell me early game progression goes anything like XIII in terms of role restriction, then tell me late game stats building is the same, if you can't show this to be true I guess I just showed that the crystarium is what I claimed.
While auto-battle may be boring to you (and me), it is the default cursor location for a reason. I did almost the whole game, except certain fights that require input, using it. The battle system is like all FF titles, once you know it you can win with your eyes closed and mostly just attack.
XIII-2 is indeed a decent game if you are the kind of person who likes X-2 imo, I own and like XIII-2 btw so again I do not dislike XIII just don't agree with the way you are describing it to a FFX fan looking for a title like X.
I can agree with everything you said, I did finish FFX with the expert sphere grid in my last playthrough, and It's true. FFXIII's crystarium reflects more FFX's linear original version sphere grid. The crystarium is indeed one of the game's weaker points and the story is VERY complicated. Also, at the start of the game FFXIII picks up very slow for it's first few chapters. But it's still fun (in my opinion).
My thought is that FFXIII was made, based with FFX in mind. And I find they are both quite similar to one another. This is my own opinion though, you don't have to agree.. OP asked for similar games, and to me, they are.
I do find XIII fun, but I always sort of thought it looked like X-2's gameplay more than X, but opinion it is and as you say we are allowed to not agree and hopefully the OP will pick some games up soon and let us know if they agree or whatever.
I personally would like the OP to tell us what about X's story they liked so I could suggest some good rpg's but with just 'graphics' and 'good story' I feel it's far too open to interpretation, saga frontier 2 for example has a very compeling story (imo) but gameplay is nothing like X and does the OP like hand drwan look or modern? Good graphics could mean alot of things.
I think a good example at least for me is Skyrim vs. the older Elder Scrolls titles. Say what you want about which you like best out of Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim but the level up systems in MW and OBV were terrible. If you just played the game without planning out getting max stat ups when you did gain a level, you could be woefully underpowered and have a difficult time doing anything.
I think a comparison between 10 and 13 is pretty apt. Enough differences to appreciate they are unique titles, but enough similarities that I think people who enjoy one will enjoy the other.
If you want oldschool JRPG goodness, "I Am Setsuna" just dropped and it's a love-letter to Chrono Trigger with a bit of Super Mario RPG mixed in. I haven't had a chance to play it yet but my brother says it's his favorite JRPG to come out in a very long time. You could also try the Trails In The Skies series. Excellent titles, both of them.
Simple is FF1-7, and 9. You just kill things and gain levels which makes you stronger. There's no choices to be made. As I said, I prefer simple. I think things are better that way usually.
Levels being gated was to keep the game semi-engaging and promote simply playing it rather than attempting to grind your way through problem encounters. By the time levels REALLY matter, it's all completely unlocked.
The battle system isn't quite the traditional one, but it's still a nice turn based RPG.
Really pretty places, interesting story. It gives me the same kind of fun FFX does, at least. :3
