Ctrl + Shift + Q will quicksave, this is true. But it doesn't save your position in the world. It saves your stats and game progress, but puts you back at the last save sphere you used. It's such a wonky feature I don't even bother advertising its existence :)
But I think it takes a while to load and save them
There's a really handy property with most console hardware, since there's no OS mucking around with memory everything's contiguous. Unallocated memory can be zero'd out with run-length encoding.
If you're using a virtual machine for something like DOS, PC game savestates can be simple too. Otherwise, forget about it :P
