The 4th planet in the Njikan system also has pristine metallic rings, I used to mine a lot of Painite, Platinum and Osmium there, and earned millions through the mining missions at the nearby station. (usually 2-3 mill per run on a 16 ton cargo rack and 6 bin refinery, primarily aiming for Painite, the rarest metal)
Not having has many osmium rocks as mining in a metallic ring can be worth the time you save on hyper jumps and super cruise.
My advice and technique is to throw away all bertrandite, gallite, and indite, preferably before the refinery turns them into a cargo unit, but this is not always possible of course. The temptation to keep everything when mining is immense, but you must try to be militant with your mining: only keep the 5 metals [platinum, palladium, gold, osmium, silver] and painite. By doing this I think I would estimate about 20-25% of a mining run would be osmium, although this can obviously be improved by being selective on your asteroids, and not refining things you don't need or want. Do make sure that you are using a "prospector limpet controller" as well though, as they improve the yield, quality, and overall speed when mining; the size of the unit doesn't really matter [as in size 1 or 3], but it's almost essential for it to be an A-rated prospector controller, as the amount of fragments you get with one is somewhere between double and triple the amount!! In a perfect world, get a 1A or a 3A prospector, and you will be laughing all the way to the bank!
IIRC, 38 Lyncis is about 250Ly or so from HIP 8396, and I presume this is why you are curious about the best way to source osmium; for the CG, and it's certainly what I am doing as well and you may even see me in the 38 Lyncis system!! If you have participated in any of the CGs for the current week or last week, then you will be around the Kaushpoos system, which is excellent placing in the bubble to get to 38 Lyncis. From Kaushpoos, the system is only about 24Ly or so distance, which takes 3 jumps in my mining python. There is a station near to the ring [Ring at 4A] that can stock you up on both fuel and limpets, and another piece of advice IMHO is to take around 75% of your cargo hold full of limpets when you are looking to collect mostly one type of resource; you can always ditch them if you have too many, as they only cost 102 credits each. Frankly this is nothing when one asteroid can give you 12 tonnes of painite at 36,000 credits a tonne! Once you have filled the hold with the 6 precious items, go to Macleod market and sell all of it but the osmium. Note that you won'f find any mining missions on the bulletin board in this system for the resources, as it is an agricultural-driven system, I think with one habitable planet. After selling your stuff and getting richer, you simply rinse and repeat the process, and you will soon get to a point where you can't actually fit any more osmium into the cargo hold! When you are ready to make the move to HIP 8396, make sure you go to a station, and switch one of the "collector limpet controller" units out for a fuel scoop. I am sure you know this, but it is easy to forget! I imagine that just one cargo hold full of osmium will get you up in to the high tiers of rewards for this CG, as I don't think there are that many contributors in comparison to the recent palladium CG.
Now I am not a wise expert on mining, but I have learnt the ways to do it by trial and error, even through all the DC issues. It was guys like Ofan, Draco, YinYin, and Paul above that got me started and pointing in the right direction, so do take heed of their advice mate!
If you want any more help or advice on mining, feel free to contact me here and I will get back to you - I will happily even wing up with you to go mining in 38 Lyncis, if you would like to have a wingman miner, as mining with pirates around can be unnerving and a real pain in the ass tbh! I can offer to either mine with you by prospecting for osmium asteroids for you directly, or I can shadow you as you mine to kill any pirates!
In any case, good luck with mining, and remember that even when you are not mining for a CG, you can now make a really good living out of it. My first miner was an Asp with 96T space, and I would always make over 1.5 million credits per run. You will also find that you pick up speed one you get the hang of it, and can do the 96T Asp run in about an hour from station to station. Give me a shout if I can help, and I will be more than happy to do so. But if you choose to mine in HIP 8396, then I would definitely follow YinYin's advice above, as you will more than halve the time it takes you to mine.
Good luck commander, and as always, fly safe O7
The system is hostile though. Spent 30 mins. in the first belt on just 3 rocks and managed to mine Osmium within my second try along gold and other goodies, thanks prospector limpet! Pretty quiet system.
New commanders enlist every month you know.
