STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

Stuck in windowed mode, no resolution options
As my title says. I can't get the game to run full screen. When I go to the resolution section of both the game and SWconfig the resolution options that should appear in the drop down menu are just blank. I've tried both this steam version and GOG and it happens with both.

Search for swkotor.ini in the game's main folder. Open it in notepad. Scroll down until you find the graphics options section. In there somewhere should be perameters for width and height. Set them to the largest 4:3 resolution that your monitor can fit. You can set a 16:9 resolution instead but this will stretch the image. If you opt for the latter, search for FullScreen=0 and change it to FullScreen=1. This is also in the graphics options section.

If any of these are not present in the graphics options section of the .ini, you can add them at the bottom of the section as:

Width=1920
Height=1080
FullScreen=1

If you want proper unstretched widescreen resolutions that will be playable while maximized, that can only be achieved via modding. Follow this tutorial:

Well, I did that and it's still not working. I'm throwing in the towl. Too much frustration. Maybe I'll just pick up the game on switch lol. Thanks for the help, though.

i have the same issue, if anyone knows how to fix this it would be awesome. I never had an issue until recently. I never installed mods on it so idk what could be affecting it

I think I figured it out!! For some reason, the game seems to freak out on monitors with high refresh rates, breaking the game's inbuilt resolution etc. settings. It CAN be fixed by editing the .ini file, as was suggested by Ragnarok, but you need to add a line to set the refresh rate as well.

Navigate to the game directory in steam (Steam\steamapps\common\swkotor), open the swkotor.ini file and edit/add the following lines:
Width=1920 (or whatever the resolution of your monitor is)
Height=1080
FullScreen=1
RefreshRate=**whatever your monitor's refresh rate is**

The key seems to be making the refresh rate match that of your monitor the .ini file. The game should (hopefully) launch full screen without having to mess around! If it doesn't work, you can try everything below, but this hopefully will fix it much more easily/without having to install 3rd party programs.

For HD/widescreen/fixing the resolution, this tutorial for UniWS/related mods works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUo6DObpsa4

It's also important to note the steps mentioned in the pinned comment about how to install the HUD modifiers - while these steps were for people who didn't have 1280x960 as a resolution option in the swconfig, they seemed to also fix things for me (who had no options at all). You also MUST change the .exe preferences to override DPI scaling (swkotor.exe --> properties --> compatibility --> change high DPI settings --> tick the box to "Override high DPI scaling behaviour" and choose for the scaling to be performed by the "Application"). If this doesn't work (i.e., the game's menu is still off centre on launch) you can change the actual scaling of your monitor to 100%, which should fix it.

While the game still launches in the silly little windowed mode after applying UniWS, you can maximise the window and the resolution/etc. is much better than it was, so the fact it's windowed is less of an issue. You can run it entirely in bordered mode by using Windowed Borderless Gaming, as described by UnarmedPug here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/208580/discussions/0/541906989390989342/. You can also fix any window offset by clicking on the Windowless program in the tray --> settings ---> game settings, and changing the X and Y offset.

Oh how I dream a dream of a day, I don't have to perform the computer equivalent of a back alley medical operation just to play on a monitor made after 2003.
thanks! It worked. It was the refresh rate for me.
