You don't understand anything about accounting and finance, sorry.

Shareholders buy shares for dividends and capital gains.

In video game industry, customers pay in cash, there is no credit. So everything is cash collection when it comes to the customers.
So video game sales represent cash flow from customers.

After paying expenses, what remains is distributable profit =) it goes to shareholders or is held in reserve. That's the final destination of cash flows.

So everything starts with gross sales. They are the primary source of cash flows. And that's why shareholders love them.

Ubisoft, the French gaming giant, was strutting into 2025 like it was about to drop the mic with Assassin's Creed Shadows. They hyped it up as their big comeback, set in feudal Japan with a Black samurai and a stealthy ninja lady, banking on it to save their sinking ship. Investors were like, “This is it, boys, our golden goose!” But then, whoops—the game launched, and the sales numbers rolled in like a tumbleweed in a ghost town.

The stock market went full Looney Tunes—Ubisoft’s shares did a Wile E. Coyote plunge off a cliff, dropping 7% in a single day and wiping out any hopes of a recovery. Why? Turns out, Shadows wasn’t the blockbuster they needed. It hit 2 million players, sure, but half of ‘em were just mooching off Ubisoft+ subscriptions or freebies, not shelling out $70.

Analysts were like, “Bro, you spent $300 million on this ‘AAAA’ game, and it’s trailing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla? Yikes.” Meanwhile, the Steam charts were basically saying, “Congrats on being #1… because nothing else launched that week.”

The kicker? Ubisoft’s PR team was out there tweeting like, “We’re #1 on Steam, baby!” while investors were panic-selling their shares faster than you can say “microtransaction.”

The stock tanked so hard it erased a brief spike from a Tencent deal faster than you can say “culture war backlash.” Gamers were mad about everything from Yasuke’s historical rewrite to the game’s buggy AI, and Japan’s parliament even got in on the roast, raising fears of a ban. Ubisoft’s now staring down a future where they might have to sell their IPs to Tencent just to avoid becoming a footnote in gaming history.

The guy above me is in some sort of competition for how many lies you can write in a single post.

Behind MH, ahead of everything else.
Everything else.... KCD2. is the only other notable release of 2025 aside from wilds when this was published. KCD2 sold almost just as much as shadows with 1/6th of the development cost and was a huge success that was received extremely well and turned a massive profit. since then 2 other notable games have come out, Schedule 1 and REPO, which also out sold it and made a massive profit with almost no development cost whatsoever.
You realize REPO came out in February, and Schedule 1 only came out 4 days after Shadows, right? Yeah, they've both been huge viral releases here on Steam, but only on Steam. They aren't on consoles, which is where the majority of AC Shadows players are.

And?

You keep missing the point that this is based off of self reporting and third party analysts, which are also comparable to/the vert same sources for AC Shadows' information. The point is, why do you cherry pick what data points we can take to the bank and others with the same level of substantiation need to be distrusted? Again, you'll take Circana's or Capcom's or Warhorse's word for it on MH or KCD, but you are absolutely incredulous when it comes to Ubisoft or Circana talking about AC Shadows. That is the point. As I have said before, I have no problems with accepting that about MH or KCD either. The issue is, you are playing a double standard. And I am illustrating that. But you are too obtuse to comprehend this lesson.

...and stocks are not the products or their sales. Which was the point.

Stocks are not equivalent to sales and there are so many factors going into stock price beyond how well sales are going for the company in question. Like I pointed out.

The desperate attempt to keep a convo going by trolling someone into doing so. The usual suspect.
He is actually a fool to the maximum degree. He just wants everyone to believe that the game was successful without showing any proof. His reply literally boils down to "Why do you believe what the company says". You cannot deal with these people.

Wow wonder where this data is for Ubisoft and AC Shadows... Oh that's right they wouldn't put this out there because it would show that it failed.

ok so they sold more copies on steam alone than shadows did across all platforms... wild, and the biggest factor, they actually made millions of dollars. but yeah shadows is #2 in "revenue" not profit. As far as profit (the only thing that really matters) its a net negative and a massive failure.

I'm glad its doing well. The best part is how in just a few years, Ubisoft will remove it from everybodies accounts just like they did with The Crew, so everybody who supported this half-baked collectathon mess with combat from 2004 and enough microtransactions to fund an entire hospital to "own the chuds" will lose access to it pretty soon anyway.

Sorry to say to anybody who bought this but, Ubisoft duped you into fighting some stupid culture war to distract you from the fact that the game is the same slop its been for a decade and they intend to steal it from you in a few short years because of their increasingly intense push against players owning the products they buy. But I hope it was worth it to own all 11 people who's problem with the game was that Yasuke isn't Asian. Hopefully you at least use this knowledge to not spend another couple thousand dollars in microtransactions on a single player game as to minimize your losses when they take this game away from you.
Hm, weird, they haven't removed AC1 from my account yet. I bet that game has more in common with Shadows than The Crew does.

Again with this stuff. Listen everyone posting this really needs to know that there are no numbers for this game, ubi has not released them, unlike monster hunter and kcd2. Saying THIS game is a high seller when it is on subscription services is a bit of a reach. Ill believe it when i see the numbers. Otherwise this is just cope.

writing an extremely cope comment finishing it with "its just cope" is mad work

Ok, im sorry for this, but you are the one to talk. Half of your comments in this forum have word "cope" directed at someone in one way or another.

You really dont want to go down that route.

Edit: I just noticed, YOU EVEN HAVE IT IN THIS COMMENT.

Wasnt the same type of argument made for Veilguard?

I digress, we dont have sales numbers on consoles either way.

People keep saying that its a console franchise, but there is no sales numbers or even player count on consoles to back that up. We can only trust Ubi on this one, but when considering their history with false advertisement (looks at watch dogs and first division), frankly, i dont believe them.

The only metric we have is 3 million players and thats it. After that: radio silence.

The people reporting that it's the second best selling game of the year so far don't work for Ubisoft, they're just analysts for market groups with access to this data, they would gain absolutely nothing from lying about this.

Im sorry do you have the numbers? Im guessing no, but you are one of those people touting this games success without any proof. So who is the person coping here?
