It went away when I disabled "Animal Gear" https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1541438907

But then I removed the mod and reverted to a save before installing the mod and now pawns are invisible all over including vanilla pawns. What gives?
Character Editor didn't cause your issues, it doesn't change in game pawn rendering it's just a tab for editing pawns and items. It's part of my debugging kit for the game specifically because it's so detached from the main game menu and is mostly just a UI representation of vanilla dev tools. You likely had a different mod update or get removed from the workshop causing your issues. Sort your subscribed mods by date updated and see if that turns up anything.

This is the latest item that turns up and it was working absolutely fine just before I tried to install Character Edit for the first time.
Removing this mod or character edit has so far not fixed the problem.
I would continue checking other mods that have recently updated. That said as a hunch I would suggest unsubscribing from and resubscribing to Vanilla Expanded Framework, when VE mods update or new ones come out they often update the framework in a subtle way that tends to cause Steam to decide not to automatically update it, and this can suddenly cause all sorts of major issues in your game. VEF does alter pawn rendering, and there is an option related to that in the mod options for it you can also try toggling on/off.
Beyond that a hugslib log would be required for further advice, and I wouldn't suggest continuing to seek help in a necro'd thread because it's likely to be locked shortly.
Don't worry about it.
Seriously though it was a mod not even from Steam.
