"Protect/Rescue the ship" type missions.
So I'm still in the first solar system and I can't win any of these, Here's how it goes; I'll arrive and immediately afterburn tword the ship I'm trying to defend and before I kill even 1/3 of the enemies attacking the ship I'm supposed to protect or rescue it's destroyed. I'm killing them as fast as I can, spending no more then a few seconds per ship, they just frequently completely ignore me and vaporize the target ship in like 30 seconds.

Ignore rescue missions until you can upgrade. Alternately, you can wait for them to blow up the merchant and then swoop in to steal the loot once they go away or pick off their attackers. It's not like won't have plenty of opportunities to rescue more merchants later.

Upgrade to what exactly? I'm already in the 2nd ship with mk2 guns on it, there's really no way to increase my offensive capability anymore then I can in this zone. These are supposedly low risk stuff already

These missions are harder, and usually more rewarding. My tactic is to fly directly at the guy you want to protect and get right between him and the biggest threat. Absorb some of the damage meant for him.

A mercenary always helps if you don't have one now...

Usualy I've found success in those missions by warping right ontop of the rescue target then targeting anything going after it. I have also found that I tend to fail when I run off to try to finish off a capital ship. Usualy once you start getting Mk3 guns and better you will find you can pull alongside other ships two hull sizes larger and kill them in a few seconds with broadsides. I've also found the laser broadsides are very powerful in general since a full charge has perfect accuracy on smaller ships as well.

Ninjad by the dev.

I've tried (and Failed) 3 of these now, feels like I never even get the chance to save the guy.

I warp in, engage one ship and BOOM! rescue target's dead, mission failed.

I'll try some of the tips here, but these missions are weird in that they show up as Green difficulty missions but are actually the hardest I've encountered in terms of not Failing the mission.

FYI Upgrading does nothing to make these missions any easier or fail any slower; as soon you buy a better ship or guns the enemies just get upgraded as well. From what I can tell the junk trader vessels you need to cover aren't upgraded, so if you couldn't save them from 3 destroyers before when you were in a Frigate, good luck saving them from 3 frigates when you upgrade to a light cruiser.

I find having a Mercenary on my side really helps. Often the Merc will kill off fighters and maybe even a capital ship on his own while I'm dealing with a bunch of other threats.

These missions are definitely broken. I've tried several and same thing happens, about literally 10-15 seconds after showing up, your target explodes from enemy fire. Getting between doesn't seem to do much good either. I'm thinking you're meant to show up in a Destroyer-type class ship with many turrets and broadsides blazing? This is unfortunate, too. I hate being pigeonholed into being a Trader, but the Merc missions are too ridiculous (escort and rescue missions are way broken). There's plenty of combat available for Traders, too, so whatevs, I guess. Still, pigeonholed does kinda suck.

These traders probably get killed by enemy fightercraft faster than by capital ships, so try reducing the sheer number of fighters by turrets, flak or heatseeking missiles as you arrive, while using broadsides for taking down the big boats.

it's like medium said a while back , strategic positioning watching the radar and positionning yourself to absorb incoming dmg, not necessarely destroy attacker the fastest way possible, also for thoose mission a merc definetly help.

prioritorize dmg absorb according to the radar closest threat and it's weapon range, and when possible destroy some attacker do it most of the time

ps:@coug wut the wut & oh my & oi xD ^^

On the other hand, you could avoid them entierly. Its not difficult to fill up your roster with other kinds of missions.

Make a single turret mount on top your "anti-fighter" turret( flak I think) and just get in the thick of things. Don't chase and you'll be fine.

Once you upgraded your ship to system standards (i.e. all Mk 2 in the first, all Mk 3 in the 2nd system) and gathered some experience in fighting multiple enemies (always kill all the fighters first), rescue missions aren't much of a problem, but rather easy. Go on, just keep trying. And yes, any frigate or corvette will do.
