For color each material should give a different combination of primary color and highlight colors. Try different materials.
Each creature does have a maximum size, and most have only one or two possible mutations.
A creature needs to be in it's native biome to lay an egg. It does not need to be in that biome to hatch.
I realise just right now, there´s A LOT more, I could write here, as I said, I´m not even aware of how wide spread these things really are among the community... If there´s some interest in more info on the topic, I can certainly add a whole lot of things, but all of the above should give you a good foundation at least....
