But having said that, they can be useful here and there.... although personally i have only ever consistently used the roamer and the nautilon.
On a creative note, they may have been channeling the Jawas craft in the first Star Wars movie where they grabbed 3cpo and R2D2.
personally i usually use minotaur, nautilus and some other exocraft which have maxed out RADAR fitted, then i can get locations spotted which i can farm a lot.
example locating drop pods which give you extra exosuit slot are great at the start of the game.
Later crashed freighters can be great to get some upgrades, although now you can get those upgrades pretty fast from different locations too.
also depots can be great money farming and sentinel drop farming.
As for if that is 'necessary' totally depends on your difficulty settings. I find myself using every nook and cranny of storage space so far, on the hardest settings.
But yea i've made suggestions on how it could be expanded on to be more useful. A science platform, or a mobile mining rig with a belly mounted laser thing, both would be neat and could add depth to both industry and exploration game loops.
I have an old save game that I visit from time to time which was from 2018. I do not play on the file and upgrade anything, but I do like to load the game from time to time and just look at the junk I used to play the game with. Now days, you start with better gear then I was able to get after 100 hours of play from back then. I still have a class C pistol with only 5 mod slots, which are already full. The cost of running the spaceship was high so I would have to use Exocraft to maneuver around the planets. I would also have to research upgrade mods and building parts at the base. There were no frigates.... no space stations....
no Anomaly... Everything you gained during play was either researched or discovered on the planets surface. So, when you got a S Mod, found a new gun or a new space ship, it was a big deal.
I remember finding a hauler ship with more slots then my starting ship, but I had to pass on taking it since I would have to repair the damaged slots and I just did not have the resources to do it. Basically, I would have to trade a working ship with a lower slot count for a bigger ship that was grounded until I could harvest the parts to get it off the ground.... but the ship was out in the middle of nowhere.... and there was no summon ship command. So was out in the middle of a fire planet with my pants down.
Totally different game back then. Much more survival oriented.
But so far, the planets I found are not ideal for the Colossus as the terrain often is a natural barrier to that big boy
EDIT: I forgot about the refiner but....you can just build ones, or use the two slot refiner in your exosuit
Just play how you want.
You get the High ground, you win, pretty much seals every fight, it's also useful to run around if you accidentally blast yourself with the Geology Cannon.
Since its so big there's PLENTY of cover & A few brief seconds to recharge anything that may need it or to switch multitools.
I keep 3 one for expeditions.that has all the available mods so I never need to buy them in Expos, The Mazinger A 4slot Neutron Cannon/Shotgun Sentinel rifle & the Pocket Mazinger which is A Neutron Cannon with the Mining gear & Fishing gear.
So sometimes A quick switch is needed.
Otherwise, best use I've ever gotten is taking one to A low Gravity Dissonant World during A Gravity Storm & making it Fly.
Built an entire base around the idea during the Adrift Expo & A lot of people seemed to have fun when they found the base, it also has A Pilgrim which during said Gravity Storms, you can fly that sucker for DAAAAYS!
Otherwise it's A niche thing, I like that it has A Refinery on it now as A Mod, that's kinda neat & useful, get it & the one on your Exosuit going, frostwart to Glass takes awhile & I use more Silica's for Building Alloy stuff instead.

All the vehicles are fun. if you're organised you can store themed resources in each exocraft.
Be sure to upgrade the Colossus engine speed to its max potential as it REALLY accelerates fast, crashing through things. Such fun with the 200% forward grip installed to climb almost vertical mountains with it.
I noticed recently in the new purple systems on a gas giant thing with weird gravity, it was fun to be inside and watch the suspension extend and contract as it swirled about in the violent winds. So cool.
It's size can also be helpful to hide behind when attacked by sentinels especially if your suit defences are vulnerable. Also if it's nearby it can be easy to spot than a smaller vehicle.
In any exocar set a hotkey and use the camera mode toggle to switch between first person and third person while driving at the click of a button. You might also assign the toggle hotkey to a controller button. I have it double tap on L1 (and for space ship).
Racing any vehicle with friends is also fun. If you find a large enough tunnels system it can be fun to make a race track and crash through them together trying to overtake one another : D
You can fish from on top too now : )
And in any exocar you can play your byte beat play list : D
