I don't know if you've stayed with it due to hardware concerns, or just like it. Either way, at least Windows 10 would be a wise move.
Switch to Windows 10, with the knowledge that that will go end of life Oct 2025.
Switch to Windows 11, however your PC may not be able to run it easily due to the new HW requirements.
Switch to a version of Linux. NMS is not officially supported on Linux, but it works for most and Linux tends to be lighter on HW requirements. When I tested Linux around 3 months ago, it just worked. A nice surprise.
If you have GoG games it gets hairy but steam games run pretty well through Proton.
Re: your win 11 more requirements comment--that's precisely why win 10 will not leave support in Oct 2025. I'm thinking they'll end up pushing out to 2028.
Has been like this since late 2022 if I remember correctly...
^^
Runs very well under Linux and no more freezing like under W10.
