Hi,

Welcome to NMS :cozynms:

I wouldn't mind to show you around in the game, but I'm playing PD and I don't do mics, so I'm probably not your best bet, but you're always welcome to send me a friend request...

Best thing to do when you're completely new to the game is to follow the Artemis quest line which is basically the tutorial.
NMS can be overwhelming... just go at you're own pace. You can't do this wrong... only right way is your way!

Have fun!

Do the starter quest up til you get you warp drive and fuel before you do multiplayer, might save a headache later.

Well, I just focus on quests and building.

I spent a week building my base up. That included rebuilding it because of the terrain edit limits. Haven't really explored much. I have visited like 4 other stars since I started to play this game.

I like taking things slowly.

The game is about whatever you want to do, maybe try to know as many planets as you can, maybe stay in a planet forever.
Alone or with company, if you can't enjoy setting your own goals, the game won't hold your attention for much time.
I'm also an older dude even older than you, but I'm a loner at heart.

i know you can do what you want, but theres just soo much.. I grabbed a salvage ship and theres like 30 blocks to REPAIR! with crap that I have no clue how to get... There is just so many different ways and things to do that I just get overwhelmed.. But I really like this game..

Never repair a ship. Just repair the engine and take it to a space station and sell it or trade it for a working ship. Its not worth the effort or the materials.

So sell any ship I salvage.. Ok got it.. How do I get money faster? SHould I upgrade my gun first? should I upgrade my ship?

You get plenty of money just being a space hobo. Find some stuff, sell some stuff, make some money.

There are ways to min-max your income, but it's an intellectual exercise that some people enjoy; you don't need the money, but you can do it if you find the process enjoyable. Some people roleplay industrialists and make a big mine, others roleplay interstellar traders making their money from arbitrage, others still grow crops to craft advanced tech with.

SHould I upgrade my gun first? should I upgrade my ship?
You will eventually want to upgrade both. You're likely to discover other versions of each that you like better than the ones you start with. Upgrade whichever you use more first, for your particular style of play.

An early-game goal with immediate payoff is to look at getting more slots for your exosuit. You keep the same one throughout the game, and the number of slots you start with is an immediate limitation. Finding and fixing a drop pod gets you an extra slot in your inventory.

You don't need to make money faster.
You don't need to upgrade your gun.
You don't NEED to upgrade your ship.

The difficulty of the game is static and barely relevant. There are no greater challenges to face, or anything like that.
Upgrade because you want to upgrade, don't feel pressured to get a fancy weapon or ship fast, as they are not needed at all.

@RotaryBlood I'm 40 and love to relax playing this game. My 2 older boys play with me sometimes and I have a brother that likes to play. I'm a pretty chill dude myself and I would be happy to have another chill dude to hang with. Friend request or PM me if interested. There is a lot I still haven't done in this game but I know enough. Let me know.

Im 44. My friend is 50. It's all good. I've never loved this stuff more than I do now. My early GenX Star Wars imagination could only dream of this stuff when I was a kid. Its finally here (walking around cities in GTA or space exploration in No Man's Sky) and I'm all over it. Too right Im not going to miss out on this stuff

I'm new to this game and only started playing it 3 days ago, I have about 10 hours on it. I'm 20 years old though

Easiest way is to find planets with either "ancient bones" or "salvage scrap" as planetary features. You can dig up items worth quite a lot there.

As for what to do, the 3 main quest chains will guide you through most of the different features/areas of the game so if you want a more guided progression, that's a great place to start.

Everything else will just fall into place eventually, it's not possible to make a "wrong" decision really, so dont worry too much about it.

So this is where us old folk go.
How you want to play determines what to do, if you like combat upgrade ship and Multitool weapons.

For early game the quickest and easiest money is upgrade your Multitool's scanner this will increase how much money you receive simply for scanning flora and fauna on planets (when maxed you can make million+ from 1 planet).

oh...as far as ships go crashed ships are a good source of units and nanites when scrapped and there is always the chance you find the ship of your dreams crashed in which case you could keep it (you can have 6 ships) and repair it as a long term project so you don't have to worry about repair costs.

oh...try to limit yourself to 5 ships just in case you meet an npc with your dream ship.

You might also checkout 'KJ PC Gaming' or 'Tolakram' on youtube both have playlists for normal mode gameplay, both are easy going Travellers and first few episodes from either should help without giving too much away spoiler alert wise.

oh and it's the best chill-out game i ever played

The Artemis Path basically shows you how to play with an intro to the abstract art of the universe you're in. That's the route i took.
