This game doesnt work anywhere near the same way Space engineers or empyrion does. Also base building isnt even the main part of the game (it is fun though) but most of the game is mostly about exploring a vast procedural galaxy and do whatever you manage to do. There are frighters, your own bases to build etc. someone even built a huge "eden" project where a dozen players in a huge community has gathered to populate a single planet. With multiplayer enabled, you will see your friends automatically when you enter the same systems (unless there are more players than you there) but that is unlikely unless you invite someone to your exact planets...
