If your in a group, ask them in chat. Probably someone gifted it to you. People in groups can gift ships to other people.

Anyways, have fun.
As for the mods for the ship, that is weird. Only mods compatible with living ships should be on it. That part might be a glitch. You might need to remove all of them except the biological updates on your new living ship.
What flavor of Save are you playing in? Normal? Creative? Expo? etc..
Multiplayer? Multiplayer~group?
Mods or Modless?
Did you lose "Discovery services" while shopping for BP and go off line? Did you force yourself offline, did XBox loose internet at any point on the Anomaly?
If you need help. Zendesk [hellogames.zendesk.com] will be happy to see your game save file and read the description of how this affected your game play.
Translation for you:
My A-class fighter was kinda crap and the class and tech all transferred automatically to the explorer which was a C to start with. Massive upgrade for free and didn't even have to move my tech around.
Im on Xbox so Im not modded, I play on normal on this save file and aside from daily and weekend missions, I play exclusively solo, not multiplayer, I never lost connection or made any changes to my connection speed, I was literally just getting blueprints, saw a cool ship and was able to get in it and everything from my previous ship transferred over, tech and inventory. I lost my previous ship in the process and the ship didn't have any living ship upgrades or tech, only the tech from my previous S class fighter.
Yea, sounds like a good deal. You got a ship that takes forever to get..lol.
An organic ship, I got on it, it transferred all the tech same stat, all was same exept skin, I thought cool, it must be something offered in the nexus.... >__<
I couldn't change the tech or add any, I didn't know anything about it, so I just exchange to another ship via NPC lol.
It's a good thing the techs were removable.
I'm not sure what exactly causes it to happen on another player's end, but obviously it has something to do with multiplayer. Somehow the game thinks the player has abandoned their ship but not unloaded it from the game. So it essentially appears as a 'free ship'...
Once you board the new ship it OVERWRITES YOUR CURRENT SHIP with the type and... seed(?) of the ship that you get into, but keeps everything else including your inventory, tech, etc.
So you do pay a price for it. The price can be big if you are unaware of the bug and you did not want to overwrite your current ship... so be careful to anyone who sees this happen.
However, it's a very nice way of "upgrading" an 'ugly' ship you don't like into a new one, assuming the bug happens around you somewhere. If someone could figure out how to get this to happen intentionally that would be really awesome and we could kinda all trade ships, or even modify ships without a save editor.
I would personally LOVE to have a living ship with a combo of regular and organic tech in it... One of a kind Cyborg ship. :D
I haven't seen it happen anywhere around me in quite a while (several months/patches) so I assumed they patched it out, but since you said it just happened to you recently then I guess it's still in and it just hasn't happened to me in a while... *shrug* Who'da guessed?
