No Man's Sky, like any other games, saves its save files in a folder (a.k.a. directory). This folder is in the AppData directory (a.k.a. folder). It's a standard folder, meaning all versions of the game on PC should use it to access and write (a.k.a. save) the save files. So, your save from GOG is in this folder, right? When you install the Steam version and launch it, it should read that save because it's using the very same folder to access and write save files.
Beyond that, I can't help you. This sort of hierarchy is basic PC stuff any gamer should know.
the steam version is reading the game saves from somewhere else
im loading a save file from 6 months ago
the gog saves is correct
my steam saves is wrong and idk how to find out where its reading the saves from
i need access to a group outside of steam / reddit where its acceptable to talk about other methods but all i find is guides on how to do things in game
method 2. C: \users\%username%\documents\mygames ( then find the game file'folder you're looking for )
launched teh gog version to checkm y save wasnt gone it wasnt, closed steam
while watching the hellogames folder where saves should go files showed up as gog copy was closing
launched steam version
saves i had just deleted are back
Difference is that GOG save files are stored in 'defaultuser', while Steam saves are stored in 'st_xxxxxxxxxxx' (the x's are numbers indicating your steam ID, I think). This is the folder where you want to copy to. Of course backup everything first.
Try copying your GOG saves over to the st_ folder, then launch the Steam client, and under top left 'Steam' drop down switch to offline mode. This should prevent cloud sync from overwriting the new saves. Then try launching the game from within the steam client. If that works, try turning off cloud sync before going back to online mode.
And you MUST turn off cloud saves in steam. In file / settings
how do you disable cloud sync
and ok now it makes sense
so i hav 2 steam number files one is full of saves and the other is blank except for an empty cache file
Thinking alike i see. I tested this and it does work.
