Xbox One Wireless Controller - Left Joystick Drifting?
Since M+K keys can't be remapped yet, I'm trying to use my Wireless Xbox One Controller for Windows. It's brand new, and I've used it in quite a few games with no problems, but for some reason when I just tried to play No Man's Sky, before I'm even in the game, the cursor in the main menu drifts down on its own if I barely even hit the joystick. It'll keep going until I stop it. I've tried to calibrate the controller in the Steam settings, but it didn't work. The last time I played a game with my controller, steam didn't have all this external controller crap. Anyone have suggestions?

I fixed this issue by doing the following:

1. Right click on No Mans Sky in your Steam library
2. Select "configure controller"
3. In the advanced options, raise the dead zone by about 10%
4. Save and exit the controller configurator
5. Enjoy the game

You can toy around with the dead zone settings till you find that sweet spot

Drifting is usually cause by controller modules. And I have bad news for you: Xbox One controllers are particularly prone to drifting. I had a lot of these over the years and some of them had drifting. What Ash mentioned is a good temporary solution to that (I did it myself), but there is the possibility that the problem will get worse. And I know that you said your controller is new, which really sucks—but unfortunately, that doesn't save it from problems common to controllers, particularly the Xbox One controllers.

So you have... four options: either do what Ash suggested and hope the problem doesn't get worse, or buy new modules from Amazon or eBay or whatever (if you can replace them yourself, that's gonna save you a lot cuz these modules are actually dirt cheap), or take it to a technician, or buy a new controller.

For the future, try to keep your controller somewhere where it won't gather too much dust and be careful when cleaning it so that no substances leak through the gap between the front plastic and the stick. And if you carry it places, get a travel pack for it. There are some competent ones which are quite cheap.

No Mans Sky is the only game thats doing this, and all 4 of my Xbox One Elite controllers are doing this. Its NOT a busted controller or the "joystick drift" that SOME controllers get. This is because most games have a dead zone automatically applied (the Xbox One OS does this automatically) and No Mans Sky is choosing to rely solely on Steam to provide raw controller input. This is fixed in one of the expiremental updates, but not the publicly available ones yet.

Oh, that's odd. I don't have this problem and I also use a wireless Xbox One to play (connected via bluetooth, no dongle).

I've test the controller in other games (and other game's menus) and No Man's Sky is the only game it's happening in.

Ash's fix worked perfectly for me, though the steps were slightly different since I had to go through the Steam Controller Configuration for some reason. So... alternative steps for folks to try:

1. Right click on No Man's Sky
2. Edit Steam Controller Configuration
3. "Menus" should be selected in the top tab by default, if not, select it
4. Click "Cursor Movement"
5. Click "Additional Settings" in the lower right
6. Move the "Dead Zone Inner" slider over a bit. I moved it to about 25%. Tweak it to suit your needs
7. Navigate back out to the first menu and select Done

Thanks, Ash!

It won't let me actually change the settings of the joy stick, but I can get to the menu
