I just wish there was some power hungry weapon system, base shield, ship cloaking device or something that would gobble up all that silicate I always wind up with.
Players like me whom may need a lot of glass from time to time wish we could strip mine the stuff with a low and slow transport ship.
Preferably with operating refiners on board.
What else explains the fact that you can fall from like 6 feet with full shield & 3 health stars and still experience that wonderful black quote screen?
Once you get even just a little ferrite dust you can add it to the terrain manipulator to get it working, then blast around you collecting lots of Silicon Dust from the terrain. Refuel it completely with the Silicon Dust (which is everywhere) and you can escape by blasting a hole in the terrain.
Unless you are digging down into Minecraft like bedrock (yes it's in this game too) you can ALWAYS dig your way out and are never 'stuck'
Oh and A++ on your search abilities
