Are the living ships worth it?
I have zero quicksilver and my first task is to build an outpost. Are these living ships worth the time I am about to do to get the quicksilver to get the egg?

It depends. Are you someone who likes to immerse themselves in a game's world, or just trying to find the best way to exploit the mechanics for whatever goal you consider to be a win? If the former, then probably. If the latter, no.

I find them to be more of a novelty type ship. They don't handle all that well, but if you find one you like they do look nice (IMO). Better off as a mid to late game achievement goal.

This sounds like you're in the early stages of the Artemis Path, the main storyline quest that works as an introduction to the game's mechanics.

If that's the case, I'd say, don't rush to get the living ship unless you're really, really excited about it. It would take a while to save up the quicksilver, anyway. You'd also need to be able to use portals, and the easiest way to gain that ability is to complete the Artemis Path.

I think the living ship is designed around adding a few new mechanics to add interest for experienced players; that might be a little confusing for a new player. The basic living ship is better than an average ship, and you can eventually upgrade it to be a great ship, but, there are easier ways to get a good ship, that follow the 'traditional' mechanics of the game.

Ive got the Horizon Omega to class A. Hopefully after doing these missions i can get this egg and let it grow while i make a ranch somewhere and milk my critters

Yes, especially in the early game. Once you finish Awakening and have access to the Space Anomaly do a few daily missions in-between other stuff your doing. Then do the weekend event. Getting quick silver is easy, but it is not quick.

Once you finish the living ship quest you will have a ship with better base stats then your starting ship and a chance to find free upgrades.

not worth it at all, there are way better ships out there with max slots and better stats.

that being said, you'll need to rip my 2 puppies out of my cold dead hands if you ever get near them, i love my little scampers and will probably never stop using them.

i wouldn't bother with them until you're basically at end game status and the only thing that's worth any value to you is quicksilver.

Better stats than living ships? Other than maneuverability, where are they lacking?

i would say definitely not worth it. regular ships are great and easier to upgrade. however, you may be able to get an egg for free, in which case it becomes a lot more worth it(tho the quest is still work in and of itself)

They look good as a decoration in my freighter

Besides having one of the highest damage potentials nah, they are pretty lacking in general considering the work you put in.

Nice look and sound effects but technologically inferior, and their chain of missions is tedious.

hey guys, since we necroing i'd like to ask: as of today, what do you have to do to replace your current living ship? (and to effectively hunt for one via reloading?)

I did it once. It’s parked now. Look around in Nexus, you’ll not see very many in there.

I haven't tried it, but to get rid of a living ship - I've read that the only way is to trade it for a new ship from an NPC
i love my living ship.
but the quest is something for the late game... because you need the right glyphs for the portal adress in the last stage of the living ship quest...

btw. my own brain grew a little with this quest :) since then i can handle NMS coords a lil better than before
