How do I reload my boltcaster?
I finally got my first weapon the Boltcaster and went to kill a sentinel, finding one quickly I decided to let blast with the boltcaster and see how combat is against these monstrosities.

About 30 shots later (used 5 to see if I could reload it) leaving me with 15 shots left and a dead sentinel with reinforcements imediately arriving. As I had lost 30% of my health in the battle and was trying to discern the loot that had come out of the sentinel to find it said boltcaster ammo.

I didn't have time to use any tools on it but simply pressing 'E' didn't pick it up or open it, health now below 50% I decided to run for my ship and get airborn to lose the sentinel threat. About a minute of flying in the area I had killed the sentinel so I could examine my loot more closely so I land and search the area for my mysterious cannister.

After a few minutes searching the entire area I found no cannister so my loot despawned when I went airborn or accidentally left system I was too exited about killing a sentinel I forgot to watch my altitude all I watched was my searching cooldown timer.

So please is there a way of recharging my Boltcaster so I can kill another sentinel and hopefully this time get the loot, and is there a certain way of getting these cannisters from fallen sentinels?

As long as you have more projectile ammunition, just press R to reload.

If you have the recipe and you should you can craft Boltcaster ammo, in lots of 1000 from ferrite dust..

I have some projectile ammunition in my inventory, the Bolcaster shows that number in it's data screen as 0/37 (i used up the rest of my ammo to see if it would help with reloading) and pressed 'R', the Boltcaster does a little graphic action as if to reload it but the ammunition stays as 0/37.

Is there something I'm missing or is that how it is meant to be when you hit 'R' except the actual reloading part?

You can also 'loot' the cannister by using your mining laser on it!

Seems it just bugged out for you then, if it happens again, see what happens if you change tools and then back into the boltcaster and try to reload it?

I just did that as well as crafted 500 bullets so I'm not sure if it was swapping the tools around or it seems to need a full magazine to reload it I'm not sure yet, so thanks as you may have cracked it.

I have to press R continuously to reload. If I hold it down or just press it once, it doesn't complete the animation. Try tapping it repeatedly while your weapon is drawn (cycle firing modes or left click to make sure your character has their weapon up). There is a little reloading progress bar that should pop up, and needs to fill to complete the reload.

I assumed this was how it worked now, but maybe it's just a bug.

When you see the white bar animation whilst reloading if you start sprinting or try and fire or make any action apart from gentle movement before its finished reloading it cancels the reload. I would advise crafting a couple of sets of ammo, and then experimenting with firing a few shots and reload, firstly standing still, then when you know its working, whilst moving, as in combat you will very unlikely ever be able to reload whilst standing still.

What worked for me: Press "R", when the reload animation starts, press an hold the Left Mouse Button (Fire). The animation continues (as long as you keep pressing the LMB) and reloads the weapon.
